About Ben
Ben’s passion for the harp began with his interest in medieval history.
He discovered the harp during his junior year of high school when one of his
teachers invited him to an Irish slow play seisiun. At the music gathering
he met Michele Mountain, his future harp teacher.
Eventually, Ben combined his passion with his interests and began performing
at medieval re-enactment events. His most memorable event was Pennsic War
XXX, a two-week war re-enactment and camping event, where he played for his
survival. He took on the role of a bard and made a living playing the harp.
A unique fusion of Celtic and Chinese music is Ben’s focus. His love for
traditional Irish and Scottish folk, Medieval and Renaissance, as well as his
Chinese folk heritage naturally led him to begin combining the very distinctive
aspects of each style into his own original sound.
Ben is a member of Harpers Hall
located in the San Francisco South Bay. The Hall’s purpose is to promote an
appreciation of the folk harp, to cultivate its living musical tradition, and
to preserve the fun and magic of the harp for members and for the general public.
About Ben's Harp
Fondly named "Lili", Ben’s harp is a customized 34-string made from curly ash wood accented with purple heart wood.
It was crafted by Dan Speer of Argent Fox Music.
The pillar is decorated with a white lily on each side and a lily and a dragon clutching a lily,
at the base of the soundboard. The artwork was done by Deborah Ethier.
